We learn about the jinx that was Robert Todd Lincoln (present at the assassinations of Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley) and witness the politicking that went into the making of the Lincoln Memorial. With Assassination Vacation, she takes us on a road trip like no other, a journey to the pit stops of American political murder and through the myriad ways they have been used for fun and profit, for political and cultural advantage.įrom Buffalo to Alaska, Washington to the Dry Tortugas, Vowell visits locations immortalized and influenced by the spilling of politically important blood, reporting as she goes with her trademark blend of wisecracking humor, remarkable honesty, and thought-provoking criticism. Sarah Vowell exposes the glorious conundrums of American history and culture with wit, probity, and an irreverent sense of humor.

And I pray, if he should be known to me and share in my hearth among my family, that I suffer all that I called upon these”. Yet in his quickness, he energetically curses the killer, and in this way, unwittingly curses himself, “I curse the doer, whether he worked alone or evaded us with accomplices, that he wear out his unlucky life as badly as he himself is bad. I’d have enjoyed a bit more from Cass’ husband Ethan. I had most of the twists sniffed out early on but still devoured this read, hoping for more. I loved following Cass’ character as she seeks her revenge while simultaneously digging herself into a deeper and deeper hole. Her marriage, career, maybe even her freedom! Now we sit back and witness Cass as her picture-perfect life disintegrates. I mean come on, what could go wrong? But of course now it seems Cass’ world is about to come tumbling down after simply opening one email. A handsome husband, 2 beautiful children, and a full partnership at a very successful ad agency. But from the first page of this little known delight I was hooked!Ĭass has it all. I think we’ve all had the thrill taken out of our thrillers this year. 6/28/2023 0 Comments A fistful of shellsUntil at least 1650, this was a trade of equals, using a variety of currencies - most importantly shells: the cowrie shells imported from the Maldives, and the nzimbu shells imported from Brazil.Toby Green's groundbreaking new book transforms our view of West and West-Central Africa. Its gold had fuelled the economies of Europe and Islamic world since around 1000, and its sophisticated kingdoms had traded with Europeans along the coasts from Senegal down to Angola since the fifteenth century. I considered the two key ‘Judgement of Paris’ categories: Chardonnay and a Bordeaux-style blend. Probably the most famous drink is on page one – a strong Irish coffee at the Bueno Vista gives Mary-Ann the courage to leave boring Cleveland for bohemian San Francisco. Mrs Madrigal prefers home-grown puff to wine but the books are full of bottles. You won’t find it on any map – search for Macondray Lane instead. I went on a pilgrimage to 28 Barbary Lane. Mrs Madrigal calls them her “logical family”. Here the priggish Mary-Ann, hippy Mona, roguish Brian and puckish Michael live, love and grieve. 28 Barbary Lane is a boarding house ruled by the mysterious Mrs Madrigal. They live at the top of a flight of rickety wooden stairs on a fairy-tale lane in Russian Hill. Maupin’s characters are the most fascinating people in the most fantastical place. Netflix are rebooting the series with Laura Linney returning as Mary-Ann and Olympia Dukakis reprising Mrs Madrigal. Nine novels later, Maupin published The Days of Anna Madrigal – please let it not be our final fix. Tales showed San Francisco in all its rainbow colours and put gay characters at the heart of the story giving them triumph and tragedy. Told from multiple perspectives at a wicked pace, Tales started as a newspaper serial featuring real news: the Jonestown massacre, the hateful Anita Bryant and even the Queen’s visit to California in 1983. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Emily brontë books in orderMuriel Spark has published many novels over the years with her most popular being the 1961 published title “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.” The novel was later made into a film that had Maggie Smith in the lead role. In 1937, Muriel left England to go to Southern Rhodesia as she had met a man she wanted to marry. Upon graduating from high school, she went to Heriot-Watt College, where she was a student of precis writing even as she taught in a private school before becoming a personal secretary. It begins with the father having a normal death in their home in the finale death, he claims to be a big fish and wants to be in the river.īig Fish has many similarities to mythology. Each one gets more mystical than the previous one. Throughout the book, the readers get to see Edward's “Death Take” four times. These stories would range from teaching a giant to farm, meeting swamp women, being dragged underwater by a huge catfish, and so much more. All he knows about his father is myths and unbelievable stories Edward told about his travels. Edward is hardly ever home but now he is dying and William wants to get to know his father. Overall, Big Fish has many similarities to The Odyssey.īig Fish is the story of Edward Bloom’s life told from the perspective of his son, William. These stories could have technically taken place however, the mythological portions make it clear that they are made up or fabricated. The surreal elements of the stories are also very similar. There are also strong parallels in the stories characters, such as the giants. For starters, the way the that heroes are portrayed is very similar. The novel Big Fish by Daniel Wallace contains many connections to mythology. 6/27/2023 0 Comments The lean startup cliff notesEntrepreneur – Everyone from young visionaries with little backing to seasoned visionaries with larger companies.
